Not really, no. Google reviews are tied to a Google account, and by default a reviewer’s name and profile photo show next to what they wrote. There is no official “post anonymously” option in Google’s review flow.
What people actually mean when they search this
A few different things, usually:
- Using a Google account that isn’t under their real name, which is against Google’s terms but technically possible and not uncommon in practice.
- Wanting to leave critical feedback about a business, often an employer or a former service provider, without it being traceable back to them personally.
- Confusing Google reviews with platforms that genuinely do allow anonymous or pseudonymous feedback.
Using a nickname-style Google account instead of a real name is the closest thing to “anonymous” that actually works, and plenty of real accounts already look that way. It isn’t a sanctioned feature, just a side effect of how Google accounts work, and a business can still flag a review it believes is fake or in violation of policy regardless of the name attached.
For a business on the receiving end
A review that looks anonymous or pseudonymous is not automatically fake, and trying to unmask every unfamiliar name is a waste of time most businesses don’t have. The better use of that time: make sure real customers, the ones with nothing to hide, are actually leaving reviews too, so a handful of odd-looking ones don’t stand out as the loudest voice in the room.
